FTP How-to

This page gives you a step by step walk through on how-to FTP your website to your webspace using Ipswitch's WS_FTP LE. You can click on any of the screenshots below to see an enlarged version.
 

1. You will create a new profile by clicking the New button in the upper right hand corner of the Session Properties window.1. You will create a new profile by clicking the New button in the upper right hand corner of the Session Properties window.
 
 

2. Next you will fill in the the following information:
  • Profile Name: ex. www.bobsmith.com
  • Host Name / Address: ex. www.bobsmith.com or 209.198.22.6
  • User ID: ex. bobsmith
  • Password
Leave the Host Type on Automatic detect. If you would like to save your password so you do not have to type it in everytime check the box that says Save Pwd.

Then hit Apply, then OK to connect.
 
 

3. You will now see your local machine on the left hand side of the screen and the webserver on the right hand size of the screen.
 
 

4 (UNIX only). As soon as you log in you will see the WWW folder. Double click on that folder. Next you will see your domain name. Double click on that folder.
 
 

5. Now you will double click on the data folder. All of your website files are placed in the data folder.
 
 

6. You should see your website files now. If this is the first time you have logged in, you will see these two files. Click on each file on the right hand side, then hit the delete button to remove them. You should clear out these two files before you begin.
 
 

7. Next you want to navigate the left side (your local machine) to the folder that contains your website on your local machine. Double click the small green arrow on the left side to move up a folder, or double click on a folder to enter it. Once you have navigated to the folder containing your web files, if you would like to upload the contents of the entire folder, press ctrl + A then hit the arrow to the right.
 
 

 8. Once you have navigated to the folder containing your web files, click on the file you would like to upload, then hit the arrow to the right. This will begin transferring your files to the webserver. If you would like to download a file from the webserver, you click the file on the right side, then click the left arrow to download it to your local machine.
